La découverte de l’homme sage: Une fable pour les étudiants en anglais.

(A Wise Man's Discovery: A Fable for English Learners)

¹ Il y a très longtemps vivait dans le Bas Pays un homme sage. Lui et ses voisins avaient construit des maisons neuves et avaient commencé une nouvelle vie.

¹ A long time ago, there was a wise man living in the Low Country. He and his neighbors had built new homes and started a new life.

² Leur premier hiver dans le Bas Pays fut difficile car beaucoup d’entre eux n’avaient  pas terminé leurs maisons et n’avaient pas moissonné leur récolte avant l’hiver. Quand le printemps fut enfin venu, il surent qu’ils devaient non seulement planter leurs cultures, mais aussi construire un entrepôt pour la moisson à venir.

² Their first winter in the Low Country was difficult because many had not finished their houses or harvested their corps before winter. When spring finally came, they knew that they must not only plant their crops, but they must also build a granary to store the coming harvest.

³ Ils discutèrent beaucoup au sujet de l’entrepôt. Tandis qu’ils vivaient dans le Haut Pays, il suffisait de le construire assez solidement pour résister à Bouc. Dans le Bas Pays, ils savaient qu’ils devaient  aussi tenir compte d’Ours, de Cerf et d’Elan. L’entrepôt devait être très solide, car Ours était fort.

³ They talked much about the granary. When they lived in the High Country, they only needed to build it strong enough to keep Goat out. In the Low Country, they knew they also needed to consider Bear, Deer, and Elk. Because Bear was powerful, the granary must be very strong.

⁴ Il y avait une vieille voie ferrée qui traversait leur village. Les grosses locomotives à vapeur qui s’en servaient autrefois n’en avaient plus besoin. Il y avait un gros fourgon en fer à roues sur la voie ferrée à environ une demi-heure de marche en aval du village. Ils se mirent tous d’accord  que si le fourgon pouvait être poussé jusqu’ au village, il pourrait servir d’entrepôt.  Même Ours ne pourrait ouvrir ses solides portes en fer.

⁴ There was an old steel road that passed by their village. The large steam-breathing machines that once used this road no longer needed it. There was a huge iron box on wheels about a half hour's walk up the steel road from the village. All agreed that if the box could be pushed to the village, it could serve as a safe granary. Even Bear could not open the strong iron doors.

⁵ Ainsi les hommes essayèrent de pousser le fourgon jusqu’ au village. Mais il était si lourd qu’ils arrivaient à peine à le faire bouger. Ils se donnèrent tous beaucoup de mal. Après beaucoup d’efforts, ils avaient poussé le fourgon juste l’espace de la paume d’une main avant d’ être obligés de se reposer. Pendant deux jours ils poussèrent et se reposèrent, poussèrent et se reposèrent. Puis ils poussèrent et se reposèrent davantage. Finalement, il étaient tous exténués. “Il serait plus facile”, dirent-ils, “de construire un entrepôt dans le village que de déplacer le fourgon”.

⁵ So the men tried to push the iron box to the village. But it was so heavy that they could barely make it move. All the men worked very hard. After much effort, they had pushed the box only as far as the length of a man's hand before they needed to rest. For two days they pushed and rested. Pushed and rested. Then they pushed and rested some more. At last, they were all exhausted. "It would take less work," they said, "to build a granary in the village than to move the iron box."

⁶ Ils construirent un nouvel entrepôt dans le village. Il contint des vivres durant deux hivers. Ensuite vint la sécheresse.  Les champs ne produirent que peu de grain. A l’automne, ils ne trouvèrent que peu de baies dans la forêt car Ours prenait presque tout pour lui. Cerf et Elan mangeaient ce qui restait. Tout de même, parce que les gens avaient été consciencieux et avaient travaillé dur, l’entrepôt  contenait assez de vivres pour passer l’hiver.

⁶ A new granary was built in the village. It held food during two winters. And then the drought came. The fields produced little grain. In the fall, few berries were found in the forest because Bear was taking almost everything for himself. Deer and Elk were eating all that was left. Still, because the people had been careful and worked hard, the granary held enough food to last them for the winter.

⁷ Puis une nuit, juste avant de se préparer à son sommeil hivernal,  Ours fracassa la porte de l’entrepôt. Il mangea une bonne partie des vivres. Après le départ d’Ours, Cerf et Elan à leur tour remplirent leurs ventres.

⁷ Then one night, just before Bear was ready to go to sleep for the winter, he smashed the granary door. He ate much of the food. After Bear left, Deer and Elk also filled their bellies.

⁸ Pendant le dur et froid hiver, et que tout le monde avait faim, l’homme sage réfléchit de nouveau au fourgon sur la voie ferrée. Certainement, décida-t-il, qu ‘il doit y avoir un moyen de le déplacer jusqu’au village. Serait –il possible que le problème ait été qu’ ils s’ étaient arrêtés pour se reposer chaque fois qu’ils avaient déplacé le fourgon juste un peu?

⁸ During the cold, hard winter, when everyone was hungry, the wise man thought again about the iron box on the steel road. Certainly, he decided, there must be a way to move it to the village. Was it possible that the problem had been that they had stopped to rest each time after moving the iron box only a short distance?

⁹ 9. Dès le début du printemps, l’homme sage eut un plan. Il amena quatre jeunes hommes jusqu’au fourgon. Chacun d’eux  chevauchait un âne.

⁹ Early the next spring, the wise man had a plan. He took four young men with him to the iron box on wheels. Each man led his donkey.

¹⁰ Tout d’abord, Les hommes attachèrent une longue corde à l’avant du fourgon. Puis ils coupèrent un grand arbre pour en faire un mât qu’ils firent tenir debout. Ensuite, ils jetèrent la corde par dessus la cime du mât . Enfin, ils attachèrent de lourdes pierres au bout de la corde. L’homme sage savait que la corde tirait le fourgon même s’il ne bougeait pas encore. Ensuite, l’homme sage attela les ânes au fourgon afin qu’ils puissent tirer aussi.  Puis, l’homme sage et les jeunes hommes poussèrent de toute leur force. Le fourgon commença lentement à bouger.

¹⁰ The men first tied a long rope to the front of the iron box. Then they cut a tall tree for a pole and stood it upright. They threw the rope over the top of the pole. Finally, they fastened heavy rocks to the end of the rope. The wise man knew that the rope was pulling on the iron box even though it was not yet moving. Next, the wise man harnessed the donkeys to the iron box so that they could also pull. Finally, the wise man and the four young men pushed as hard as they could. The iron box slowly began to move.

¹¹ Mais le plan de l’homme sage était différent du plan des villageois plus tôt. Lui et les jeunes hommes ne s’arrêtèrent pas pour se reposer.  Au contraire, même lorsque les lourdes pierres touchèrent le sol, ils continuèrent à pousser le fourgon.

¹¹ But the wise man's plan was different from the villagers' plan before. He and the young men did not stop to rest. Instead, even after the heavy rocks had reached the ground, the men kept pushing the iron box.

¹² Le fourgon  fit exactement ce que l’homme sage avait pensé. Plus ils poussaient, plus le fourgon gagnait en vitesse. Ils ne devaient pas s’efforcer tellement  à le faire rouler une fois qu’il commença à bouger.

¹² The iron box on wheels did just what the wise man thought it would. The longer they pushed, the faster the iron box moved. They did not need to work as hard to keep it rolling once it began to move.

¹³ L’homme sage savait que si tous les hommes du village travaillaient ensemble, ils pourraient déplacer le fourgon jusqu’au village. Il savait qu’il fallait beaucoup de peine pour que le fourgon commence à bouger. Mais une fois en mouvement, certains pouvaient se reposer tandis que d’autres poussaient.  S’ils ne s’arrêtaient pas, ils pouvaient lentement déplacer le fourgon jusqu’au village.

¹³ The wise man knew that if all of the village men would work together, they could move the iron box to the village. He knew that they would all need to work very hard to get the iron box to start moving. Then once it was moving some could rest and others could push. If they did not stop, they could slowly move the iron box to their village.

¹⁴ L’année suivante, leurs vivres seraient à l’abri d’Ours.

¹⁴ The next year, their food would be safe from Bear.

¹⁵ Si vous commencez à apprendre l’anglais avec Spoken English Learned Quickly, vous savez qu’apprendre une langue est difficile. Vous pouvez y travailler dur pendant deux ou trois semaines et il semblera que ça n’avance à rien. Cependant apprendre l’anglais, c’est comme  si vous poussiez un  lourd fourgon sur la voie ferrée. Au début, cela demande beaucoup d’effort. Mais si vous continuez à travailler, vous ferez de plus en plus de progrès.
